Group counseling is a small group of students who are working toward the same goal. Often we can learn things from each other that we can't from teachers or counselors. The group environment fosters cooperative learning in a more individualized setting.
At Elmwood, groups are run on an as-needed basis. We would typically meet during lunch or study hall for 20-30 minutes, once or twice a week, depending on the group.Throughout the group experience, confidentiality is stressed to all members. Students are encouraged to share their experiences with their parents, but are not allowed to talk about other students.
Examples of groups that could be offered at the middle / high school level are: Body Image / Self Esteem, Divorce / Mixed Families, Study Skills, and Test Taking Skills.
