Science

PHYSICAL SCIENCE - (9) (1 credit) (Required)  This course will explore our physical world through an introduction to concepts of chemistry and physics.  Math skills will be used to evaluate several topics.  Some of the topics that will be explored include: 1) the scientific method 2) measurement and measuring systems 3) chemical and physical change 4) atomic structure 5) naming elements and compounds 6) chemical reactions 7) forces and motion 8) energy 9) waves 10) work and power 11) famous scientists.   This is a required course for all 9th grade students.

BIOLOGY - (10) (1 credit) (Required) A closer look at major concepts in life science. Covered topics include classification of living things, cell anatomy and processes, genetics, evolution, microbiology, and ecology. Both plant and animal kingdoms are examined in detail.

ECOLOGY - (11-12) (.5 credit) (Prerequisite: Biology) Learn more about the natural world around you!!  This course focuses on the environment and issues that concern all of us. Gain more information about Earth's resources and whether they will be plentiful enough to support our growing population. Study ecosystem structure, function and change by active investigations of local ecosystem - The Eau Galle River. Learn what you can do to help monitor the environmental health of your neighborhood.  Explore ecology concepts through project WILD Project Wet and Project Learning Tree.

CELL BIOLOGY - (11-12) (.5 credit) (Prerequisite: Biology) Dig deeper into modern cell biology with this advanced course. Learn more about what each part of the cell does. Examine current applications of molecular genetics and biotechnology. Learn about how cells grow and change through an investigation of cancer and its causes. Finally, apply what you have learned by investigating how cells come together to function as tissues and organs in the human body.

HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY - (11-12) (.5 credit) (Prerequisite: Biology) An in depth look at the parts and functioning of the human body. Each system will be investigated thoroughly and interaction between systems will be explored. Learn where your illium, alveoli, and vastus lateralis are - among many other parts. Comparative anatomy will be studied using dissection of a relative mammal - the white rat or fetal pig.. (This is a highly recommended course if you are planning on any type of health care occupation.)

CHEMISTRY - (11-12) (1 credit)  (Prerequisite: Geometry or Algebra II) This course will focus on matter - the stuff every thing is made of. Begin with the basic unit of matter, the atom, and extend your knowledge through interactions between different types of matter. Investigate chemical reactions through mathematical modeling and hands on lab activities. Strengthen your math skills through problem solving. (This class is required for admittance to most colleges and some technical schools.)

PHYSICS - (11-12) (1 credit) (Prerequisite: successful completion of Algebra II or instructor’s approval)   This course provides a way for us to look at our surroundings in a quantitative way.  Subjects covered will include mechanics, waves, energy orms, energy transfer, properties of light, sound, gas laws, heat, conservation of energy, electricity and magnetism.  A scientific calculator is required for this class.  If you are planning on going to college and you like science and math this is a recommended class.
