Independent Study: Junior/Senior status students depending on eligibility. Eligibility: A minimum quarterly GPA of 5.0 must be maintained or students will be rescheduled into study hall. Students are required to carry a minimum of seven classes per semester in the eight period day.
An Independent Study is designed to:
- resolve a schedule conflict for a desired class
- meet a specific graduation requirement
- extend beyond existing course offerings when all offerings have been taken & passed
The following must be meet before an Independent Study will be considered for approval:
- The proposal must show an outline of the proposed study.
- There must be a testing method detailed to provide an adequate check for understanding of the new material covered in the independent study course.
- The proposal will note where and how supervision will occur.
- If the course is offered by regular curriculum and the student is a junior or younger, the independent study request will not be approved.
- A term paper of three pages or more as a final summary of knowledge gained during the course is required. This should be to an acknowledged, foot-noted form pre-approved by the instructor. The paper must be of "B" level or above. A copy of the final paper will be supplied to the principal.
Independent Studies involving non-required courses will be taken "Pass/Fail", meaning it will not impact your Grade Point Average without specific prior approval from the principal.
INDEPENDENT STUDY/PEER TUTORING - (.5 to 1 credit with pass/fail grade) (Seniors and Juniors may be eligible with the approval of the principal.) Peer tutoring will give students interested in fields such as education, child development, experience working with youth and other types of helping professions. Students will be paired with teachers to help assist students who need help in a particular academic area.
INDEPENDENT STUDY/WORK RELEASE - (Senior status) (.5 to 1 credit with pass/fail grade) The work release program for eligible seniors is an arrangement between the student, school and career oriented work station. The work release privilege may be authorized for a semester in place of a student’s one potential study hall. Students applying for the Work Release privilege must have written permission from their parents, employer, and principal stating his/her approval. Students will be removed from the Work Release privilege if they are not in regular attendance at their work site or demonstrating satisfactory progress in scheduled classes.
