Consumer Education

FOODS 1 - (9-10) (.5 credit)  This course is an in depth study of nutrition along with the preparation of nutritious foods like eggs, quick breads, soups, and low-calorie foods.  Meal planning, menu writing, and careers in foods and nutrition are also included with some projects.  Throughout the semester, decision making, practical problem solving and thinking skills are emphasized.

 ADVANCED FOODS - (10-12) (.5 credit) (Prerequisite: Foods 1) This is a study of more advanced foods like yeast breads, meats, pastries and desserts, cakes, pressure-cooking and some cultural foods.  After studying each unit, students will plan and prepare the foods needed for labs.  We also explore some of the careers in the food service industry.  If the course is in the fall semester we will spend several weeks on food preservation. 

 CLOTHING 1 - (9-10) (.5 credit)  This course is a study of basic sewing. Students will learn how to read patterns, use supplies correctly, sew on buttons and operate a sewing machine.  Throughout the semester, there will be various sewing projects to construct at a cost to the student.

 ADVANCED CLOTHING - (11-12) (.5 credit) (Prerequisite: Clothing 1) This semester course focuses on projects that are more challenging. Some skills used might be sewing a zipper, buttonholes or a collar. Students also have the option of designing and creating a quilt.

 CONSUMER ECONOMICS - (11-12) (.5 credit)  The purpose of this course is to promote an understanding of economic decisions that all consumers have to make in their lifetime.  Topics include getting and keeping a job, managing money, understanding credit and consumer rights and responsibilities.  A money management packet provides hands on experience in writing checks and balancing a check book.

 FAMILY LIVING - (11-12) (.5 credit)  This course covers the life cycle of the family.  A study of prenatal development is included along with the problems, prevention and alternatives of teen pregnancy.  Issues that deal with providing a safe, healthy and nurturing environment are studied, including proper care of babies and children.  A simulation using Baby Think It Over is part of this learning experience. This course will also cover topics such as love, dating, engagement, marriage and sexual issues.  Social issues, such as divorce, step families, runaways, alcohol and drug abuse are also discussed.

 SINGLE LIVING - (11-12) (.5 credit)  This class is designed for any student, male or female, that need the skills necessary to survive after graduation. The class covers the basic of food and nutrition, laundry, job skills (including interviews), how to sew on a button, mending and the basic operation of the sewing machine.

 HEALTHY LIVING - (10-12) (.5 credit) This semester course will focus on how to keep your body healthy and in shape. We will look at and discuss the statistics of weight problems, poor eating habits, health problems of being overweight and fad diets. The Dietary Guidelines and Food Pyramid preparation labs will be incorporated to reinforce healthy habits. Each student will have a variety of physical tests to start the semester. These tests will include a body fat analysis, flexibility, vertical jump, Harvard step test and strength tests. Students will use their personal goals to design their own fitness program to work on throughout the semester. A grading rubric will be used to evaluate the fitness program.
